Social media is a buzz that Karthik should now be considered as India’s No. 1 option for the wicketkeeper-batsman’s slot.
Memory for a lifetime:
Dinesh Karthik on last-ball six
The Indian team management has made it quite clear that MS Dhoni, despite his recent struggles with the bat, is the No. 1 option for that slot going into the 2019 World Cup. Even so, Karthik, who has close to 20000 domestic runs across formats, can be considered a pure batsman in the limited-overs line-up.
Absolutely no, India has fortunately moved to a position where wicket keepers bat and they have to bat well. Dinesh Karthik was given a hell lot of opportunities in Indian ODI set up as a batsman. And he batted with such poor consistency that even if he was a gloveman+batter and not a specialist, selectors would have knocked him out and would have brought a better batting wicketkeeper. He still managed to play 79 ODIs, sometimes I thought selectors and Dhoni are backing him up a bit too much.
Even in limited games he got as a keeper he always did something stupid that costed the game, like a dropped catch or a mis stumping.
I remember this from probably one of his last ODI appearances.
The Ind-SL-WI tri series in WI, a match against WI, he missed a stumping of Charles probably in Ashwin's wide around leg stump delivery and Charles went on to make 90 odd runs to win WestIndies the game.
So no, not Dhoni, he himself was responsible.
