The Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli ODI return is a topic many are watching closely. In the coming days, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) will meet at the ICC Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Singapore. This meeting could decide if Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will play ODIs again soon.
The BCCI may try to add the 50-over format to any new series. For now, there is a two-month break for the Indian team after the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy ends on August 2, 2025. The next games are set for the home season against West Indies. However, the Asia Cup 2025 takes up only three weeks, leaving room in August for possible matches against Sri Lanka.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli now only play ODIs. They have stopped playing Tests and T20Is. India’s ODI games are few this year, so a series with Sri Lanka could bring the Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli ODI return. Talks about this started recently, but things have slowed down.
The chance for a white-ball series came up when the India-Bangladesh series was canceled due to safety issues. At the same time, the Lanka Premier League (LPL) was delayed. So, SLC suggested a short series of three ODIs and three T20Is to the BCCI. These talks were planned to move forward at the ICC meetings in Singapore. A senior SLC official said, “We’ve received positive feedback. Further discussions will happen in Singapore during the ICC meeting. We expect a final decision within two or three days”.
From SLC’s side, this series makes sense. They finished in the group stage at last year’s T20 World Cup. Also, Sri Lanka lost their first T20I series to Bangladesh recently. Playing India would help their team and bring in money. They picked venues in Colombo and Kandy for the games. Everything seemed ready at first. Moreover, this could lead to the Rohit Sharma Virat Kohli ODI return, as ODIs are their main format now.
However, doubts appeared soon after. A report from Sports Tak quoted a BCCI source saying, “We will decide about the series, but it looks unlikely”. This has made the series less certain. If it does not happen, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli might not play until October 2025, when India goes to Australia for three ODIs. That would be more than eight months since their last game in the 2025 Champions Trophy final on March 9, where India won against New Zealand.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli left Tests in May 2025 and T20Is after the World Cup win last year. ODIs are all they play now. India has only six more ODIs in 2025, three against Australia and three against South Africa. So, chances for the Rohit Sharma Virat Kohli ODI return are limited. The BCCI holds the key. They will decide at the ICC AGM in Singapore within 48 hours if the Sri Lanka tour goes ahead or if the break stays.
Additionally, the BCCI is looking at options. SLC and BCCI are close to finalizing details, with a schedule possibly coming soon. If approved, the series would be in early August 2025, focusing on white-ball games. This fits the gap after India’s Test series in England ends. However, some reports say the BCCI might put a hold on it.
Overall, the next two days at the ICC AGM will settle this. The Rohit Sharma Virat Kohli ODI return hangs on the BCCI-SLC talks. If it works out, India could play in Colombo and Kandy soon.
