The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 is not even halfway done, yet two teams are already in a strange competition. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), once known for their strong batting, are now fighting to see which team has the worst batting lineup this season. Both sides have struggled game after game, with their batters failing to deliver. Except for one or two good performances, itās been a tough ride for these teams. So, letās dive in and figure out which team is more miserable, CSK or SRH.
Where It All Falls Apart
First, letās talk about CSK. They lost to Punjab Kings (PBKS) by 18 runs on Tuesday, and that defeat showed a big problem. CSK have failed to chase targets of 175 runs or more for 11 straight games since 2021. Simply put, their batting has been terrible. Meanwhile, SRH, a team full of big names like Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, Heinrich Klaasen, and Nitish Kumar Reddy, has also disappointed. Fans expected fireworks from this lineup, but instead, theyāve seen flops. Both teams have lost four out of their five matches so far. Now, letās break down their batting struggles step by step.
Opening Troubles
For both CSK and SRH, the opening batters have been a huge letdown. CSK tried Rahul Tripathi as an opener in the first three games, but it didnāt work. Then, they brought in Devon Conway, who has done okay in the last two matches. However, Rachin Ravindra has struggled to score consistently. In the powerplay, the first six overs CSK have the lowest scoring rate (7.50), the lowest average (22.50), and the fewest boundaries (17.24%) among all IPL teams this season.

SRHās opening pair of Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma has also failed to click. Head has shown flashes of his ability, but Sharma has been quiet. Once called the āTravishekā duo and feared by bowlers, theyāve turned into a weak link. In five matches, CSKās openers have scored 257 runs, while SRHās have managed just 199. Other IPL teams are smashing runs in the powerplay, but CSK and SRH are stuck. CSK play too slowly, like theyāre in the past, while SRH try too hard and lose wickets quickly.
Unsteady Number Threes
Next, letās look at the number three spot. For CSK, captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has been up and down. His scores this season are 53, 0, 63, 5, and 1, good one day, gone the next. He often comes in early after an opener falls, but he hasnāt been able to keep the runs flowing. Similarly, SRHās Ishan Kishan started with a bang, scoring 106 in his first game. But since then, itās been a disaster. His scores are 106, 0, 2, 2, and 17. Both players have put extra pressure on their middle-order because they canāt stay consistent.
Middle-Order Mess
Now, the middle-order is where things get even worse. For CSK, Shivam Dube has struggled to make an impact. His scores are 9, 19, 18, 18, and 42. Even as an impact player, he hasnāt stayed long enough to finish games or set big totals. MS Dhoni, a fan favorite, has faced criticism for batting too slowly and coming in too low in the order. In the last two games, he moved up, but CSK still lost. His scores are 0, 30*, 16, 30*, and 27 shows heās trying, but itās not enough. Ravindra Jadeja hasnāt had much time to bat, while Vijay Shankar played a painfully slow knock against Delhi Capitals. CSKās middle-order is a mess.
SRHās middle-order isnāt much better. Aniket Verma has been their only steady batter. Big names like Klaasen, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Abhinav Manohar have barely shown up. Game after game, these players fail to deliver, leaving SRH in trouble.
Whoās Worse?
So, who deserves the āworst batting sideā title? CSKās problems come from playing too carefully. They donāt take risks in the powerplay, and their middle-order canāt finish the job. SRH, on the other hand, swing too hard and lose wickets fast. Their star players have let them down badly. Both teams have lost four games, but SRHās openers have scored fewer runs (199) than CSKās (257). Still, CSKās long streak of failing to chase 175+ targets makes their case strong.
In the end, itās hard to pick a clear winner or loser, in this unwanted race. CSK and SRH have both turned their batting strengths into weaknesses. Fans of these teams can only hope their batters wake up soon. For now, IPL 2025 is showing that even the biggest names can struggle when it matters most.
