Shikhar Dhawan: The man who always smiles announces retirement

A player who never stopped smiling even in difficult circumstances has said goodbye to international cricket. We are talking about Shikhar Dhawan, one of India’s best left-handed batsmen. Although Dhawan has announced retirement, he can be seen playing in the India Premier League (IPL).

Shikhar Dhawan last played an ODI for India in December 2022 against Bangladesh. Dhawan has played a total of 269 matches for India and scored 10,867 runs. Also, he has 24 centuries and 44 half-centuries in his name.

Shikhar Dhawan first came to the attention of the selectors when he scored 505 runs with 3 centuries in the 2004 Under 19 World Cup. Despite this excellent performance, Dhawan had to wait for years to make a place in Team India. He gets a chance in the ODI match against Australia in 2010, but he gets out on 0. Shikhar Dhawan emerged into prominence when he got a chance in the Test match against Australia in 2013, where he became the fastest batsman to score a century in the debut test, Dhawan scored a century in just 85 balls.

Thanks to this stormy innings, he once again gets a chance in the ODIs. In the 2013 Champions Trophy, Shikhar Dhawan scored two consecutive centuries for India, first against South Africa and then against the West Indies. India won the 2013 Champions Trophy and Dhawan scored 363 runs in the entire tournament, for which he was named Player of the Tournament.

People also fondly call Shikhar Dhawan as Gabbar and in the cricket world, he is also called The Man of the ICC tournament. In the 2015 ODI World Cup, Dhawan scored 412 runs in 8 matches. He scored 338 runs in the 2017 Champions Trophy. Dhawan’s excellent form continued in the 2019 ODI World Cup but he had to sit out due to a thumb injury.

Over time, Dhawan’s declining strike rate became a cause for concern, especially in T20s. He played his last T20 match in July 2021. Although his score was not bad before being dropped from the team, he had scored 52, 46, 40 and 52 runs in the last 7 innings. Dhawan scored 618 runs in IPL 2020 and 587 runs in 2021, but these innings were not enough to earn him a place back in India’s T20 setup.

Although Shikhar Dhawan was out of the team, many questions were raised when he was not selected in the Indian team for the Asian Games in August 2023. Dhawan was repeatedly dropped from the Indian team but he always accepted it with a smile.
