Defending champs Montreal Tigers top league stage as Global T20 Canada approaches play-offs

The fourth edition of the Global T20 Canada has finally reached its business end with the Montreal Tigers, Brampton Wolves, Bangla Tigers Mississauga and Toronto Nationals sealing their play-offs berths.

Defending champions Tigers topped the table with 10 points after their final league match against the Surrey Jaguars was abandoned even after being reduced to five-overs-a-side following a delayed start. Earlier, incessant rains in Brampton on Tuesday forced an abandonment of the first game of the day between the second-ranked Wolves and No.3 Bangla Tigers.

In the play-offs, the Chris Lynn-led Montreal Tigers will lock horns with David Warner’s Brampton Wolves in the first qualifier on Friday before the third and fourth placed Bangla Tigers Mississauga and Toronto Nationals meet in the Eliminator, the same day. The winner of the first qualifier will directly qualify for the GT20 Canada title clash, while the losing side will take on the winner of the Eliminator in Saturday’s second qualifier for a shot at the final.

On Tuesday, Chris Lynn decided to bowl at the toss, and his new ball bowlers — Corbin Bosch and Kaleem Sana — justified the call by picking a couple of wickets in the first two overs until Jaguars’ batter Mohammed Nabi received a nasty hit on his hand from a rising delivery, leading him to retire hurt. The Jaguars had already put up 12 runs on the board by that time.

At that point, the officials held a long discussion with both captains, and eventually decided to call off the contest with both teams being awarded a point each.

Surrey Jaguars, with four points from their seven league stage outings are already out of the race for the play-offs. Reflecting on his experience of playing the tournament, Jaguars’ skipper Marcus Stoinis called it a great competition and said “it’s the best time to be playing cricket in this generation”.

“Canada loves their cricket, this is a great competition. Yes the conditions have been challenging but that’s for everyone out here playing. The opportunity that cricket’s got at the moment, the game’s growing around the world, everyone’s started playing high quality cricket, and as I have said, it’s the best time to be playing cricket in this generation,” Stoinis said.

Earlier, the match between Brampton Wolves and Bangla Tigers Mississauga was called off due to incessant rain. It started raining early in the afternoon and the heavy downpour ensured that the covers never really came off the pitch.

Both teams finished the league stage on nine points after playing seven matches each.
