The T20 World Cup 2024 match between India and USA (IND vs USA) took a dramatic turn when India were awarded 5 penalty runs during their run chase. This penalty, a relatively new rule, put India in a much stronger position in the 16th over. So, why these penalty runs were warded to India and how this penalty system works?
So, what exactly happened?
India needed 35 runs off 30 balls to win the match. The pressure was on, but things got even more interesting when the umpires stopped play for a conversation. After a chat with the stand-in captain of the USA team, Aaron Jones, the umpire signaled a penalty – five runs awarded to India.
During the IND vs USA match, these penalty runs was a consequence of a new rule in T20 cricket: the fielding side (USA in this case) needs to be ready to start their next over within 60 seconds of the previous over ending. This rule is enforced using an electronic clock displayed at the ground, counting down from 60 seconds.
How the penalty system works:
- First offense: If the fielding side isn’t ready within 60 seconds, the umpire gives them a warning.
- Second offense: Another warning is issued, reminding them it’s the final chance.
- Third offense (and any after): The batting side gets awarded 5 penalty runs!
Apparently, this was the third time USA had taken too long to start their over, leading to India’s bonus runs. We don’t know exactly when the first two warnings happened, but the third one clearly impacted the game.
This penalty system isn’t just for the fielding side. There’s a similar rule for batters who waste time. If the fielding side is ready but the batters aren’t, the umpires can penalize them under a different rule.
The good news for India is that these penalty runs helped them reach their target score with 10 balls to spare, ultimately winning the match by 7 wickets.
The stop clock to help speed up over rates in men’s cricket became a permanent feature in T20Is and ODIs. After its board meeting in Dubai, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has implemented this rule from June 1 for the full members. Additionally, this system has been trialled since December, last year.
This incident is a reminder that cricket is constantly evolving, with new rules aiming to improve fairness and maintain the excitement of the game. Meanwhile, the T20 World Cup 2024 is almost into its next round of Super 8.
