Yashasvi Jaiswal moved closer to another big score in Test cricket on the first day of the second Test match between India and West Indies at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. The 23-year-old left-handed batsman finished the day unbeaten on 173 runs, helping India reach a strong position of 318 for 2 wickets after 90 overs.
Jaiswal showed his class with a patient but attacking knock that lasted 253 balls and included 22 boundaries. His innings helped India take complete control of the match on day one. Captain Shubman Gill was batting alongside him at stumps, having scored 20 runs from 68 balls.
Yashasvi Jaiswal Builds Solid Foundation for India
The day started well for India after Gill won the toss and chose to bat first. Jaiswal opened the innings with KL Rahul, and the pair put on 58 runs for the first wicket. Rahul made 38 runs before getting stumped by wicketkeeper Tevin Imlach off the bowling of Jomel Warrican.
After Rahul’s dismissal, Jaiswal found a perfect partner in Sai Sudharsan. The two batsmen added 193 runs for the second wicket in what became the highlight of the day. Sudharsan played well for his 87 runs before falling just 13 runs short of his first Test century. He was trapped leg before wicket by Warrican, who finished as West Indies’ best bowler with 2 wickets for 60 runs.
Record-Breaking Performance Continues
This innings marks another special achievement for Yashasvi Jaiswal in his growing Test career. The knock of 173 not out is his seventh Test century, making him only the second Indian after Sachin Tendulkar to score seven Test centuries before turning 24. He has now matched Graeme Smith’s record for most Test centuries by an opening batsman before age 24.
What makes Jaiswal even more special is how he turns his centuries into big scores. Five out of his seven Test hundreds have been scores of 150 or more runs. Only the great Don Bradman had more 150-plus scores before turning 23, with eight such innings compared to Jaiswal’s five.
Journey to Test Stardom
Jaiswal’s Test career began in July 2023 with a debut century of 171 runs against the same West Indies team. Since then, he has scored consistently across different countries and conditions. His second century came against England in Vizag with a score of 209 runs in January 2024. The very next Test match saw him score an even bigger 214 not out against England in Rajkot.
The young opener has shown he can perform well in tough conditions too. He scored 161 runs against Australia in Perth during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Earlier this year, he made centuries in England at Leeds (101) and The Oval (118), becoming the first visiting batsman to score centuries on debut in both England and Australia.
The West Indies bowling attack found it hard to create pressure on Jaiswal throughout the day. Their captain Roston Chase tried different bowling options, using both pace and spin from early in the innings. The spinners Warrican and Khary Pierre bowled 40 overs between them but could only take two wickets.
Jayden Seales, Anderson Phillip, and Justin Greaves bowled with pace but failed to trouble the Indian batsmen consistently. The West Indies fielding was also not up to the mark, with Sudharsan being dropped on 58 runs by Warrican before the bowler eventually got him out.
India’s score of 318 for 2 puts them in a commanding position after day one. This was the fourth-best score by India on the first day of a Test match this year. Jaiswal’s 173 runs in a single day was his second-highest score in one day of Test cricket.

The partnership between Jaiswal and Gill at the end of the day added 67 runs from 129 balls. Both batsmen looked comfortable against the West Indies bowling and will be looking to add more runs on day two.
The left-handed batsman celebrated his century with a heart gesture and blew kisses to acknowledge the crowd’s support. This showed his connection with the fans and his joy at reaching another milestone in his young career.
With 173 runs already scored, Jaiswal needs just 27 more runs to reach his third Test double century. He has already scored double centuries twice before – both against England in the 2024 series. If he reaches 200 runs in this match, he will become only the fourth Indian batsman to score three double centuries in Test cricket.
The conditions at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium seem perfect for batting, with the pitch offering little help to the West Indies bowlers. This gives Jaiswal a great chance to convert this century into another big score and help India build a massive first innings total.
Statistical Achievements
Jaiswal’s current Test record shows why he is considered one of the best young batsmen in world cricket. In 25-26 Test matches, he has scored over 2245 runs at an average of around 50. His strike rate of 66.22 shows he scores runs at a good pace without taking unnecessary risks.
The young opener has now scored more Test centuries since his debut than all other Indian openers combined during the same period. While he has scored seven hundreds, all other Indian openers together have managed only six centuries.
As day two approaches, all eyes will be on whether Jaiswal can reach his double century and help India build an even bigger total. The West Indies will need to find ways to dismiss him early or face the possibility of a very large first innings score that could decide the match.
Jaiswal’s form in this series has been impressive, and another big score would further cement his place as one of the top opening batsmen in Test cricket today. His ability to score big hundreds consistently at such a young age suggests he could break many more records in the years to come.
The match continues on day two with India in a strong position thanks largely to Jaiswal’s excellent batting display on the opening day.
