It’s the 18th edition of the Indian Premier League, the biggest cricket league across the world. This cash-rich tournament has seen some of the best players from different nations compete against each other, with ten teams going head-to-head to win the coveted trophy and cash prize.
With every season, new records are set, and new milestones are created. Fresh talent emerges and new players create history with their records.
Virat Kohli, who is not new to this format, has become a veteran of the game over the years. Since the first year of IPL in 2008 he has been associated with the same franchise, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru and has openly expressed his desire to retire from the game by playing for the same franchise.
He continues to script records year after year, whether it’s through his runs, his catches or his matches. This time the star batsman has added another feather to his illustrious IPL career.
Virat Kohli has etched his name into the records of the IPL trajectory on Thursday, April 10, by becoming the first player to smash 1000 boundaries in the tournament’s rich history.
The RCB stalwart, who has now played in all 18 IPL seasons, reached the milestone during his batting while playing a match against the Delhi Capitals at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
This iconic moment came in the fourth over of RCB’s innings when he smashed a towering six on Axar Patel’s delivery, taking his tally to a staggering 1000 boundaries. This historic record includes Virat hitting 721 fours and 279 sixes, as of his last IPL match.
The brand ambassador of his franchise, Kohli’s fabulous fitness has been the reason he is able to survive for longer durations any game. With this achievement, he has added yet another feather to his already shining cap.
The batting maestro leads the list for hitting maximum number of fours in IPL history, while he holds the third position in terms of sixes, only behind the legends Chris Gayle (357) and Rohit Sharma (282). Kohli has so far scored 186 runs in this ongoing IPL season. With one more big knock, Kohli is poised to become only the second batter in T20 history to notch 100 half-centuries, trailing behind the great David Warner, with 99 fifties to his name.
In terms of IPL statistics too, Kohli has 55 half centuries to his name, behind Warner who has 62 half centuries to his credit. With the current form, the day is not far when he would cross this mark and become the top-rated batsman with highest half-centuries to his name. So far, he is the only player to go past the mark of 8000 runs, and with over 8,190 IPL runs to his name, Kohli’s landmark further cements his position as the undisputed king of consistency in the tournament’s history.
Despite this record-holding figure, KL Rahul’s innings stole the spotlight with a sublime 93 not out off 53 balls, guiding Delhi Capitals to a commanding six-wicket win over Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
