The rise in T20 cricket as a format has been tremendous. Apart from the ICC World Cup as an event, several T20 leagues have been organised by nations and to increase the popularity for the sport, owing to the lesser time duration and more action to watch in the game.
Indian Premier League is the world’s biggest cricket league which sees athletes from across the world register and rake in big money, attention and visibility at an international level. Apart from it, Pakistan Super League and Caribbean Premier League are also popular.
Within India, the states conduct local T20 league at the domestic level which allows young and aspiring cricketers to set foot in the professional space. Soon after the IPL 2025 concludes, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) will host the T20 Mumbai League.
While Rohit Sharma, India’s ODI and Test captain is most likely to be the face of the league, the governing body has made it mandatory for marquee players like Suryakumar Yadav, Prithvi Shaw, Shivam Dube, Shreyas Iyer and Shardul Thakur to participate in the tournament, unless they sustain any last-minute injury or get selected for India’s upcoming England tour, which is slated to begin right after the IPL.
As per the news available so far, around 2800 players including local cricketers, have registered for the T20 Mumbai League auction. However, the association has yet to finalize the base prices of the players. It is quite overwhelming to see registrations in such high numbers, showing the popularity and craze for cricket amongst people.
The league will be an eight-team competition, with the MCA adding two more sides to the tournament as of last week. It is likely to be held from May 26 to June 5, after the conclusion of IPL 2025.
The present lot of Indian players including Ajinkya Rahane, Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, Shivam Dube, Prithvi Shaw, Shardul Thakur have been informed that if they are not picked for the England tour, they have to participate in the Mumbai T20 League.
The MCA will be paying Rs 15 lakh each to all Indian players as appearance fees besides their auction money. Season 3 in 2018 had featured six franchises, namely North Mumbai Panthers, ARCS Andheri, Triumph Knights Mumbai Northeast, Namo Bandra Blasters, Eagle Thane Strikers, and Aakash Tigers Mumbai Western Suburbs.
