Bhuvneshwar Kumar Becomes a Part of Elite List of Pacers in IPL History

Bhuvneshwar Kumar etched his name in the books of history by accomplishing a memorable milestone in the Indian Premier League. On Wednesday, Bhuvi became the joint-highest wicket-taker amongst the group of pace bowlers, in the IPL tournament.

This feat was achieved during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s match against the Gujarat Titans, held at the M. Chinnaswamy stadium on April 2. Despite his impressive spell of 1 wicket for 23 runs, RCB suffered an eight-wicket loss on their home ground as the guests successfully chased down the target of 170 runs.

Kumar’s performance saw him level Dwayne Bravo’s long-standing record of most wickets taken by a pacer in the history of the cash-rich league, boasting a total of 183 wickets.  Kumar reached the record by dismissing the Titans’ skipper Shubman Gill in the fifth over of their innings.

While the former West Indies star, Dwayne Bravo reached this huge figure in 161 match appearances, Kumar reached it in 178 matches.

With this milestone unlocked, the Indian pacer now shares the third position on the all-time IPL wicket taker list, trailing only behind the solid spinners Yuzvendra Chahal with 206 wickets and Piyush Chawla with 192 wickets.

Out of the three matches that RCB has played until now, Bhuvneshwar has been part of two of them and also taken a wicket in each of the matches played. In the past too, he has been a prolific wicket-taker for the sides that he has played for, all due to the commendable adaptability he possesses.

His technical skill set has proved to be highly useful for his franchises. This year, he was bought by the Challengers from Bengaluru for a whopping INR 10.75 crore in the auction.

Popularly known as the ‘Prince of Swing’, Bhuvi displayed his class and expertise by delivering an economical spell, conceding runs at just 5.80 per over. Though his efforts proved to be insufficient for his team, the record-equaling performance will remain as a big positive take-away from the match.

With many more matches left ahead, Bhuvneshwar will certainly manage to go past Bravo’s record and inch closer towards promoting his name up the rank in this elite list. He may even go on to surpass Piyush’s record of 192 wickets, if the same consistency is maintained in the forthcoming matches too.

For cricket fans and followers of the IPL, Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s rise to glory as he joined the esteemed names of wicket-takers proves his hard work and practice as an athlete.
