The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made big changes to the Indian cricket team’s support staff after a disappointing 3-1 loss to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Assistant batting coach Abhishek Nayar, fielding coach T Dilip, and strength and conditioning coach Soham Desai have been sacked, according to BCCI sources. The decision comes after India’s poor performance in the series and reports of dressing room leaks, which upset the team’s management.
A Tough Series for India
India started the Border-Gavaskar Trophy with a strong win in Perth, raising hopes of another series victory. However, the team couldn’t keep up the momentum and lost three of the next four matches, ending with a 3-1 defeat. This loss also cost India a chance to play in the World Test Championship (WTC) Final at Lord’s. Fans and critics were quick to point out the team’s struggles, especially the batting failures of captain Rohit Sharma and star player Virat Kohli.

Rohit Sharma scored only 31 runs in three matches, with an average of just 6.20. Virat Kohli managed 190 runs in five matches, averaging 23.75, with one century. Australian pacer Scott Boland troubled Kohli repeatedly, dismissing him four times by targeting his weakness outside the off-stump. These poor performances put extra pressure on the coaching staff to explain the team’s batting collapse.
Why Were the Coaches Sacked?
Abhishek Nayar, a former Indian all-rounder, faced criticism for his role as assistant batting coach. The BCCI was unhappy with what they called a “Kolkata Knight Riders touch” in the team’s management. Nayar, along with Ryan ten Doeschate, joined the Indian team’s coaching staff after working with head coach Gautam Gambhir at Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL. While Nayar’s work with young batters was praised earlier, the BCCI felt his methods didn’t deliver during the Australia tour.
Similarly, fielding coach T Dilip, known for his creative ideas like awarding fielding medals, and strength coach Soham Desai were let go. Reports of dressing room leaks, where private team discussions reached the media, also played a part in the BCCI’s decision. The board wanted to send a strong message that poor performance and lack of discipline wouldn’t be tolerated.
New Guidelines for Team Discipline
In January, the BCCI introduced strict rules for the senior men’s cricket team to improve discipline and team unity. These guidelines cover travel, baggage limits, family visits, and team behavior. Players must travel with the team for matches and practice sessions, and separate travel with families is discouraged. Any exceptions need approval from the head coach and the selection committee chairman. The BCCI hopes these rules will keep the team focused during tough tours like the upcoming five-Test series against England, starting June 20, 2025.
With Nayar, Dilip, and Desai gone, the BCCI has made temporary changes. Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate will take over fielding duties, while South African trainer Adrian Le Roux, who works with Punjab Kings in the IPL, will handle fitness training. No replacements have been named for Nayar or Dilip yet. The new support staff will join the team before the England series, giving them a chance to rebuild.
