Punjab Kings (PBKS) kicked off their IPL 2025 campaign with an exciting 11-run win over Gujarat Titans (GT) in a high-scoring match. Captain Shreyas Iyer starred with an unbeaten 97 off 42 balls, guiding Punjab to a massive 243 for 5. Despite a strong fight from Gujarat, they fell short, thanks to tight bowling from Punjab’s Vijaykumar Vyshak and Marco Jansen.
Punjab batted first, and Shreyas Iyer Biography led from the front. He walked in early after Prabhsimran Singh got out, caught at third man off Kagiso Rabada. Iyer started hitting big shots right away. Opener Priyansh Arya supported him with a quick 47 off 23 balls, smashing a six and several fours before leg-spinner Rashid Khan got him out. Then, Shashank Singh joined Iyer and blasted an unbeaten 44 off 16 balls. Together, Iyer and Shashank added 87 runs in the last five overs, pushing Punjab to 243 for 5, the highest total ever at this ground.
Chasing 244, Gujarat Titans began well. Captain Shubman Gill Biography and Sai Sudharsan put on 61 runs quickly before Gill got out. Next, Sudharsan, who scored 74 off 41 balls, teamed up with Jos Buttler for an 84-run stand in just 40 balls. After Sudharsan left, Sherfane Rutherford came in and hit 18 off his first 7 balls, bringing the target down to 75 runs off 36 balls. For a moment, it looked like Gujarat might pull it off. Vijaykumar Vyshak turned the game for Punjab. He bowled fast and wide, stopping Rutherford from hitting freely. Even though he bowled some wides, Rutherford couldn’t rotate the strike, piling pressure on Buttler. Then, in the 18th over, Marco Jansen struck, bowling Buttler, who made 54 off 33 balls. Gujarat’s hopes faded fast. In the final over, Arshdeep Singh sealed the win by knocking over Rutherford’s stumps for 46 off 28 balls. Gujarat finished 11 runs short, giving Punjab a well-earned victory.
Earlier, Punjab’s batting had some big moments. Priyansh Arya kicked things off with a risky but fast knock, hitting a six off Mohammed Siraj and fours off Arshad Khan. After Arya fell, Azmatullah Omarzai greeted Rashid Khan with a six. Marcus Stoinis also chipped in, adding 57 runs with Iyer before getting out to a reverse sweep. But the real fireworks came from Iyer and Shashank at the end. Their late hitting made sure Gujarat faced a tough chase.
This win is a great sign for Punjab Kings and Shreyas Iyer. After moving from Kolkata Knight Riders, Iyer has reunited with coach Ricky Ponting at Punjab. His unbeaten 97 shows he’s ready to lead by example. For years, Punjab has struggled to perform well in key moments, but with Iyer’s strong start and Ponting’s guidance, they might finally find consistency. Fans will hope this victory is just the beginning of a successful IPL 2025 season for the Kings.
