A big announcement from the Rajasthan Royals camp has been made. The management has announced that Riyan Parag will lead the team for the first three matches of IPL 2025, set to begin from March 22.
The announcement follows Sanju Samson’s decision to delay his return as captain until he regains full fitness; though cleared to bat, he remains unfit for wicketkeeping duties.
The young all-rounder from Assam will take charge in the opening fixture against Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 23, followed by home encounters against defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders on March 26 and five-time champions Chennai Super Kings on March 30.
Sanju Samson, an integral part of the Royals set-up and the full-time captain of the pink squad will remain a key contributor with the bat till he gets the clearance for wicket-keeping and fielding as well. He will return as captain once fully fit to essay all the roles in equilibrium.
Part of the Rajasthan Royals setup since 2013 and skipper since 2021, Sanju Samson has been one of the IPL’s most consistent performers in recent years.

RR’s decision to hand Riyan the captaincy throws lights on the franchise’s confidence in his leadership ability and performance over the years, a skill he has demonstrated through his tenure as Assam’s domestic captain.
Having been a crucial member of the Rajasthan squad over the years, his understanding of the team’s dynamics makes him well-equipped to step into this role for the initial phase of the tournament. However, this will be the first time Parag will lead the team since beginning his IPL career in 2019.
As a first-time captain of a reputed team, it will certainly not be a smooth ride since the pressure to perform in IPL and prove his mettle as a skipper will come with its own challenges too. It will be interesting to see how Riyan emerges out of it.
Last year he emerged as one of the top performers in the league, scoring 573 runs in 16 matches. The RR media team took to their official social handles to confirm the announcement, as they shared the video of Sanju announcing Parag as the skipper in a team meeting.
The franchise had won the IPL title in its inaugural season in 2008 under the legendary late Shane Warne’s captaincy. With an experienced core, budding young talent, and a well-structured leadership transition, Rajasthan Royals remain committed to laying a strong foundation in the latest edition of IPL 2025.
