Rishabh Pant – Sanjiv Goenka’s Post-Match Chat Goes Viral

On March 24, Delhi Capitals took on Lucknow Super Giants in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) season 2025 match.

With an unbelievable start for LSG, the team led by new skipper Rishabh Pant posted a huge total of 210 runs, with Nicholas Pooran and Mitchell Marsh firing shots all over the cricket stadium in Vizag.

Despite the total, DC won out of nowhere by 1 wicket, leaving the commentators and spectators spellbound. It was then that LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka decided to have a chat with captain Rishabh Pant and head coach Justin Langer, with a similar scene that reminded of the incident with then captain KL Rahul last year.

Despite having DC on the brink at 113 for six in the 210-run chase, LSG could not close the match in their favor. Ashutosh Sharma played a phenomenal knock, scoring 66 of 31 balls under pressure.

Pant on his debut as captain and player, had a rather ordinary day on field. In a match where more than 420 runs were scored and five batters batted at a 200-plus strike rate, Pant managed a six-ball duck.

He was outsmarted by former DC teammate Kuldeep Yadav. His captaincy and performance behind the stumps were also not up to the mark. Shardul Thakur, the most experienced bowler in the LSG unit, was given only two overs despite the right-arm medium pacer getting two wickets in his first over.

Even when mere 22 runs were needed in the final two overs, Pant gave the ball to a novice Prince Yadav instead of the experienced Shardul. The young pacer was hit for 16 runs, including two fours and a six.

In the ultimate death over, Pant decided to summon spinner Shahbaz Ahmed, over Shardul again, who has closed out a few last-over matches for India in the past.

All of this could have been undone had Pant held on to a stumping chance in the last over of the match. Shahbaz delivered a beautiful ball, beating the last man Mohit Sharma but Pant could not gather the ball behind the stumps as it had changed its direction after Mohit’s back pad. Probably, this negligence costed LSG the match.

Definitely luck plays a part in this game and if it could have missed his (Mohit Sharma’s) pads, it was a chance for stumping. But these things happen in the game of cricket, you can’t focus on these things, but rather you need to play better cricket,” Pant expressed in his post-match presentation.

Soon after the embarrassing loss, Goenka decided to have a candid and open chat with his captain and coach Justin Langer. Brought in for a whopping INR 27 crore, Pant certainly has to deliver up to the expectations and justify the hefty price tag attached to his name.

Though the conversation was not as animated as the one with former captain KL Rahul in IPL 2024, which many believe was the beginning of the end of his tenure at LSG, but it was a quiet reminder to Pant that he would have to get his act together too.

His mettle as a captain and player must be proved well, by producing match-winning results and not lose despite having the upper hand throughout the innings.
