HISTORY

It was back in 1912 when an all-Indian cricket team went to England for the very first time to play a cricket match. The team was led and sponsored by well renowned Maharaja of Patiala.

The year 1926 saw two representatives of Calcutta Cricket Club travelling to London to attend a meeting of Imperial Cricket Council. Knowing that the representatives weren’t the official ones for India, it wasn’t legal to attend the meeting, however, on the approval of the then chairman of the conference, Lord Harris, everyone worked out successfully.

The meeting did wonders for the Indians, as the MCC decided to send a team to India to play cricket. The team was led by Arthur Gilligan who also had captained England in the Ashes.

Upon arrival, the Maharaja of Patiala held a meeting with Gilligan where the former requested the Englishmen to press for Indian cricket in ICC. Gilligan agreed to the proposal but with a condition.

He told the Maharaja to bring all the promoters of the game together and form a single cricketing body for control in India which eventually led to the idea of the formation of BCCI.

On 21st November 1927, a meeting took place regarding the same which was also attended by delegates from Patiala, Delhi, United Province, Rajputana, Alwar, Bhopal, Gwalior and others. It led the formation of a consensus to form a board of control for cricket in India.

In December 1928, the BCCI was formed and registered under the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act with six association affiliated to it. BCCI’s full form- Board of Control for Cricket in India.
