The Indian team has landed in New Zealand and are currently gearing up for the five-match T20I series which starts on January 24 at the Eden Park in Auckland. It should be a thrilling series to watch with the two greats, Virat Kohli and Kane Williamson, taking charge for their sides in the buildup to the ICC T20 World Cup later this year. On that note, let us take a look back at the best three T20I matches between India and New Zealand.
New Zealand vs India, Auckland, 2019
After getting beaten in the first T20I, India came out strongly against a tough Kiwi side at the Eden Park in the 2019 series. Krunal Pandya rolled his arm over to get three crucial wickets while Khaleel Ahmed bowled a tight spell to ensure the visitors restrict New Zealand to just 158 runs a good batting track. Colin de Grandhomme scored a quickfire 50, but it wasn't enough. Stand-in captain Rohit Sharma came out firing with a knock of 50 as well while Rishabh Pant finished the job with his 40 as India reached the target with seven balls to spare. Krunal Pandya got the man of the match award for his efforts.
Brief scores: India 162/3 (R Sharma 50, R Pant 40, L Ferguson 4-0-31-1) beat New Zealand 158/8 (C de Grandhomme 50, R Taylor 42, K Pandya 4-0-28-3) by seven wickets.
India vs New Zealand, Thiruvananthapuram, 2017
It was the series decider of the 2017 series in India. Rain reduced the match to an eight-over affair. India batted first and managed only 67 for 5 in their eight overs. It seemed that the Kiwis will take home the trophy but Jasprit Bumrah had other plans as his spell of 2 for 9 from two overs made sure that the visitors fell short by just six runs in a pressure run chase. Bumrah was the man of the match in a match.
Brief scores: India 67/5 (Manish Pandey 17, Tim Southee 2-0-13-2) beat New Zealand 61/6 (Colin de Grandhomme 17, Jasprit Bumrah 2-0-9-2) by six runs.
New Zealand vs India, Hamilton, 2019
After India leveled the series in Auckland, New Zealand came out determined to win the decider in Hamilton. Kiwi opener Colin Munro blasted 72 as the hosts posted 212 for 4. India during the run chase kept the required rate in check but the inability to build a big partnership hurt India in the end. Vijay Shankar top-scored for India with 43. Dinesh Karthik and Krunal Pandya tried their best but India was only able to score 208 for 6. By the virtue of this, New Zealand won the series 2-1.
Brief scores: New Zealand 212/4 ( Munro 72, T Seifert 43, Kuldeep Yadav 4-0-26-2) beat India 208/6 (V Shankar 43, R Sharma 38, Mitchell Santner 4-1-32-2) by four runs.
The 2020 T20I series between New Zealand and India has five T20Is, so we can say that a few more classics are on our way. This will be the first time these two sides will play a T20I series of five matches.
